Achillion led the group through the warehouse, carefully pointing out which crates and boxes to use as landmarks. He needed them to learn the route, in the event he couldn’t be there in the future. He didn’t think there would be any problems if they drifted from the route. For all of Whisper’s guards, Achillion never believed the man would start a fight.

Rounding a bend and entering the final tunnel, he approached the same guard who was there every time. Achillion already warned the kids about needing to surrender their weapons. As expected, Attia argued, but eventually agreed. The only other one of them with a weapon was Liam, and he didn’t have an issue with it.

Once they surrendered their weapons, they proceeded to the meeting room. The signatories who wanted to be in attendance were already there. Achillion timed their arrival that way. He didn’t want to leave idle time. He thought it would lead to arguments that might jeopardize the treaty.

“Welcome, everyone,” said Whisper. He was wearing an oversized robe, like normal. This one was green. “There are stools if anyone wishes to sit. Otherwise, stand, if you like.”

“So, finally I get to see Bioja’s murderer, face to face,” growled Vallon.

The cat that Eliana was carrying hissed and growled. Achillion wasn’t sure what to make of the cat. They talked about it in the academy. He knew it was an El’orin, but he didn’t understand what made it so special to the group. He hoped its presence wouldn’t complicate matters.

“She murdered Claw, too,” said Mend. She recently started accompanying Stone to Conclaves, now that Saro was out of the picture.

“What are you talking about? Claw challenged me to single combat,” said Attia. “You were there. You saw it. Just because I won doesn’t make it murder!”

“That’s not how it went with Bioja,” hissed Vallon. “His friends told me what happened. You poisoned him. You twisted his mind and made him see things, and then you killed him in cold blood. You never gave him a chance to fight.”

“It wouldn’t have mattered,” said Attia flatly.

“How dare you!” spat Vallon.

“Hold your tongues, and hold you anger!” snapped Whisper. “We’re at Conclave, and there’ll be no violence here.” Whisper glared at Vallon, but only until the old wizard calmed down. “Now, our purpose today is to expand the treaty, as was already voted upon, but before we do so…” Whisper paused and faced the group of newcomers. Achillion was pretty sure Whisper was staring right at Attia. “Are the new folks prepared to honor the terms of the treaty? That means no more hunting us.”

“I think he’s talking to you, Attia,” whispered Conner.

Achillion spun and faced the group. Attia was standing in the center. Malcolm was the only one standing beside her. The rest of the group must have stepped to the side during her argument with Vallon. Her expression was chilly, but determined. There was something about her stance, or perhaps the set of her jaw, that made it clear she wouldn’t back down.
